Ok if you can make it through the 3 minutes of nonsense where Xaphoon Jones is having the crowd pick the topics for Proto to spit about, you’ll see some crazy live hip-hop. Forget all the “I say uhhhhh” that gets chalked up as a freestyle nowadays, Chiddy Bang comes correct on this. Oh and I almost lost my shit when that kid yelled, “Rhyme about fucking Inception, that movie is AWESOME!”

The homie e-dubble is a 7 foot MC out of Baltimore, by way of Philly, who’s been flooding the internets with material. About to hit his 31st straight week, e-dubble has been dropping freestyles every friday, and his range of musical influence mirrors the kind of melting pot that is the midset behind #sotff. Call it inspiration, call it necessity, call it anything you want, but stayoffthef*%$#n’flowers is coming back and e-dubble is a perfect representation of the kind of talent that will be echoing out to the masses.

Look for thecomebackkid(c) mixtape in the coming days, and be sure to peep e-dubble’s facebook and twitter while we wait for his next Freestyle Friday cut to drop.

I’ve been off my game with stayoffthefuckinflowers for some time now, and this summer I’m looking to take a different route with this site/another one thats geared more towards me creating rather than sharing all the shit I think is dope with the rest of the internets. For the time being, here is a clip of Just Blaze talking about the constant battle between bloggers and record labels; something that has a huge impact on the industry today. Keep a look out for some fresh content this summer from thekidc of my own creation (mixed in with a few hot tracks here and there of course).

The homie TJ Chapman passed this video along to me this weekend. B.o.B performs his cut “Letters From Vietnam” at Power 99 in Philly, an acoustic set that really highlights this dude’s versatility as an artist. Look for the track to appear on The Adventures of Bobby Ray when it hits stores on April 27.

I don’t think I could be more excited about any upcoming project than the new Black Keys album. Following 2008′s Danger Mouse produced Attack and Release, and last year’s Blakroc project, this record was conceived during a time where the ‘Keys have been on the cusp of genre bending genius that stretches from grassroots blues composition, to the heart of indie rock, all the way to the ears of innovative samplers and rhyme sayers.

A master of many disciplines when it comes to a guitar and drum kit, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney can get in the pocket covering Captain Beefheart or backing the RZA. Brothers is, for the most part, self-produced by the duo, but Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse, returned to lend a hand with the song “Tighten Up.”

Brothers will be out May 18th, and you can download “Tighten Up” and another cut from the album, “Next Girl,” if you buy a presale ticket for one of theirs show on their website.

This cut goes OFF!!!! Glad to see new material from Big Boi surfacing these days. This one comes off Big Boi’s upcoming release, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty, (tentatively) dropping May 4th from Def Jam.

It’s been raining non-stop for the last two days up here in NH (and everywhere else in New England, so I’ve heard), and the weather has made me impossibly unmotivated to do anything, including blogging–my bad. Anyway, as I’ve locked myself within the confines of my house other than when it is entirely necessary for me to be somewhere else, I’ve found myself in various states of reflection. Usually that just involves continued viewing of the Big Lebowski which, don’t get me wrong, has also been occurring.

Mostly, I’ve had a lot of time to distract myself from more pressing issues with my usual escape from reality; music…more specifically, new music. I stumbled upon this song while going through my RSS feed, and saw the posting on 2dopeboyz. This is the first I’ve heard of the MC, but I was drawn in by the artwork and my pretentious need to know more underground artists than any of my comrades. I took a listen on that Sunday night of discovery, and the beat took ahold of me without any sign of letting go. Various agents of procrastination kept me from posting it on here that night, but fuck it, I don’t think the “exclusive” game is for me anyway.

Over the next couple days of rainfall and skipping class, I took to the comfort of my headphones, and the lyrics really won me over. Reminiscent of when my roommate introduced me to Atmosphere way back during Freshman year, I actually got into to listening to hearing what was being said. And that’s what differs me from some of the people I know when it comes to music. I’ve come to find that all the Drake stans that surround me (no shots, you can’t really hate on anyone for their personal opinions…some might say I’m cursed for giving this much of shit about what comes out the speakers and into my ears) is that I look for a clear-cut display of authenticity and appreciation for craft, rather than just a widely accepted and shared appeal for the artist.

For me, it’s those poignant moments in a song that keep me interested instead of a quick lyrical jab that makes everyone say “Ohhhhhh shitttt!!” and not really give a fuck about anything else the dude has to say. But it’s really not fair for me to say whoever is holding the spotlight doesn’t deserve it–that’s what the people want right now.

Still, among all the mediocre that’s been paying the bills for people all over the mainstream, the struggling and/or unknown and unheard artist will always be the one to create something that will stand the test of time. Out of pure honesty, mixed in with the selfish need to chase that moment of accomplishment, and without the need to impress anyone but him(her)self…the real will always surface.

I could blame all this rambling on the weather, or maybe some pent up frustration with the state of pop music, but in reality…people who really love music don’t give a shit about pop music anyway. So for now, I’m going to keep on listening to the good tunes that give me something to forget about those rainy days, and think back on my need to create.
